About Us
The idea of Bearne's Voluntary Primary School was conceived in 1788 by Hannah Maria Bearne, for the teaching of poor children of the parishes of Highweek and Wolborough.
Although the pupils were required to attend at some place of public worship, no preference would be given to children of a particular persuasion or sect of the Protestant religion. This would set the school apart from others in the area. The school still has a Trust to this day and is the only school of its kind in Devon.
The school was initially set up in 1843 in buildings at the end of a court in Wolborough Street, which had been formerly occupied by the Wolborough National School. The present school was built in 1859 in order to house boys in one department and girls in another.
The school was extended to include two more classrooms in 1881, and the indoor toilet facilities and administration office were added on to the existing building in 1991.
Our community hall was officially opened in January 1998, after a successful fundraising campaign, and has since had the addition of a suspended ceiling to improve acoustics.
The school has had the playground resurfaced, security measures have been put in place and modernisation is an ongoing process.
The school has further plans to improve and grow, and we are currently looking at the development of an undercover early years play area, A separate Headteacher's office has recently been added.

Our school aims to continuously strive to raise standards thus providing each and every one of our pupils with an equal opportunity to realise their full potential within a happy, caring and stimulating environment. We believe that it is important for pupils, staff, parents and Governors to work together in partnership. We consider that every individual matters.
More specifically our aims are to:
Provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, which encompasses all levels of ability.

Develop an understanding of mathematical skills and the ability to use them in relevant situations.

Ensure that our pupils can communicate effectively through reading, writing and speaking. To encourage a love of books and fuel their natural thirst for knowledge.

Raise awareness in our pupils of the world about them. To develop an informed concern for the quality of their environment and our multi-cultural society.

Stimulate our pupils natural curiosity through scientific study which involves observation and experimentation.

Encourage each pupil to develop their talents and confidence to the maximum, through Music, Art, Drama and Physical Education.
- Demonstrate the value in co-operation with others. To provide them with the knowledge that concern, respect for others and a caring attitude benefit us all and that these qualities, coupled with self-motivation, are all worth striving for.
- Protect and value our school's non-denominational Christian character.
- Provide the requisite skills in Information and Communication Technology to help prepare our pupils for life in the twenty-first century.
Promote and expect a good standard of behaviour by developing self respect and confidence and nurturing our pupils physical and emotional maturity. To provide the opportunity to develop spiritually, morally and culturally leading to well-balanced citizenship.
